What it costs

A flat fee, set by how much work your Claim takes, never by how large it is. You know the price before you sign, and it does not move when the credit does.

Flat fee, priced on the work, never on the size of your Claim. The CRA asks every Claim to declare its billing arrangement (T661, line 950). Ours is code 4, flat fee.

If the CRA reviews a Claim I prepared, I handle the response. The first 10 hours are included.

If I start and conclude your Claim should not be filed, your deposit comes back and you owe nothing.

Year one full price, year two half, then a handover package so you can file on your own.

Prices in Canadian dollars, before any applicable sales tax. No repository or issue tracker moves a Claim up one band, because the record has to come from interviews instead.

Why flat, and how the CRA sees it

Every Claim declares who prepared it and how they were paid, on form T661 lines 935 to 965. Line 950 is the billing arrangement. Code 1 is a contingency fee, a percentage of the credit, and the percentage and the total fee go on your return. Code 4 is a flat fee.

Mine is code 4. A percentage fee grows with the credit whether or not the work did. A flat fee is priced on the work, so what you pay me has no reason to push the numbers either way.

One more thing worth knowing: the fee for preparing a Claim is not itself an eligible SR&ED expenditure. It is an ordinary business expense, and it never enlarges the pool the credit is computed on.

How payment works

  • The Verdict is free. No card, no commitment.
  • A $500 deposit when we sign the engagement letter, credited against the fee.
  • The balance when I deliver the Narrative and the Fill sheet, due within 15 days.
  • If I start and conclude your Claim should not be filed, your deposit comes back and you owe nothing.
  • Payment never depends on what the CRA decides. That would make it a contingency fee, and it would have to be declared as one.

What is included

The Verdict, the Narrative, the Fill sheet, and the questions your accountant has while filing. If the CRA reviews a Claim I prepared, I handle the technical response with you: the first 10 hours are included, and beyond that it is hourly, agreed in advance.

Not included: filing your return. Your own accountant does that.

The plan is for you not to need me

Year one is full price. Year two, for the same company, is half. After that you get a handover package: the structure, the evidence habits and the worked Fill sheet, so your team can file on its own.

By the third year most companies know how to do this. Paying a consultant every year after that is rarely good value, and I would rather say so now.
